there are 2 types of history tm there is a peoples oral history and the hsitory taught at schools. the greek athenian was most likely ate that time in athens an albanian by birth and mother language, his knowledge of ancient hellas would have been insignificant unless he was one of the small few who had an education. it was only the establishment of the bavarian hellenic kingdom that a real interest and some knowledge of the pagan hellenes would develop. in the 20thcentury the phillhellenic based western ideas of who the hellenes was taught in greek schools, consequently we now have many greek intellectuals who are experts on the hellenes and whose glory they greedily devour, like cronus his sons.

in macedonian oral, culture defining history, aleaxndar makedonski has alway existed, as did kraal marko of prilep. the ancient greek myths and homeric stories were non exsitent, and learned at school. the many different speaking christian peoples of the territory of greece had a history world view set quite firmly in the ottoman experience, its heroes would be the christian saints roman emperors and leaders of uprisings and not odyseus sailing the mediterranean. they were as the writer states happy easterners of the orthodox faith and ottoman world.

well put, osiris. oral history is far more pure. official/school history is prone to politics and propaganda, especially in a police state such as modern greece.

correct. it is usually up to the individual to keep an open mind and properly seek all sides to a story. independent thought is scarce in many societies.

This is very true. I was taught that John Cabot was a Brit. I found out later in life that his name was actually Giovanni Caboto.
