It's all very well to have this go up as it put's macedonia on the map.But at the same time gruevski so readily compromises in case greece complains by calling it warrior on a horse. Why doesn't he have the balls & back bone to tell greece off that macedonia is a sovereign country & it can put up any statue it likes after all alexander was a macedonian. :excited :fencing :banana

Fantastic statue!!!! It's enormous, just how it should be! It's long overdue, and for all of the people who complain about it: We look at statues from 4,000 years ago and are able to determine the history of the region. If these statues weren't built in the past 10 years, what would the future generations have to say about today's Macedonia? There is no piece of history left, except for these bronze (almost forever-lasting) statues. Think about the future, not just today! That's always the problems of the Macedonians, they only care what type of car they drive today, not how that will affect the food in their fridge next week.

Aleksandar - Our Hero!!

George You have to be joking right ?

It is the first time the Macedonian government has done something this significantly good for Macedonia, and your complaining about the name "warrior on a horse" :wall

The World including FOROG know that its Aleksandar Makedonski.

All these new public works are fantastic. I've greatly seeing all the pictures of these new statues and very much look forward to one going over to Macedonia to see them in person. Plus these statues will very much repay their worth many times over in the years to come. Skopje very much needed a bit of a facelift and already the statues have received much coverage.

Well done to the government on such bold and confident piece of public policy.

I think the Macedonian government or anybody who thought about the name of the statue had an excellent idea in naming it “warrior on the horse”. Macedonians surely do not lack sense of humor!!!! They actually took away from greeks the possibility for a real protest. Very smart move that shows the absurdity of the name dispute and the interim agreement with greece!

This statue and fountain will truly become a tourist attraction. It's another landmark for Skopje. Skopje 2014 is well under way with many of the projects nearing completion.

Our southern neighbour should focus on its nearing bankruptcy.

Correction, our southern neighbour is already bankrupt. That is why the EU/IMF had to invent a whole new language to avoid saying it directly and yet enable Yunanistan to receive the bail out funds.

"Skopje 2014" is fantastic, and especially the monument to Alexander III the Macedonian!

With it we are re-creating Macedonia's history in a formal (historical) context. It means our definitive determination to do away with the attacks on our Macedonian identity. Now we the people are the ones that are responsible, and are branding Macedonian culture with the Macedonian nation.

The title of the monument to Alexander is a great -- repeat GREAT! -- way to take the wind out of Greece's sale (and that of its mentors). You will notice that the Greek hienas in teh media and the pro-Greek ones (primarily Bilgarian and Serbian) are responsible for the slanted articles in the media.

Vodenka,

Do you know of any list of public places that Greece changed names since 1913 to promote "greek macedonian"

We all know the prefectures were changed from Northern Greece to West, Central, East Macedonia in the late 1980s

Mirka airport was renamed Macedonia
a university in Solun was renamed University of Macedonia
etc

It would be nice to have to send to journalists covering the balkans to show them how greece is trying to rename everything to macedonia and the ROM was founded back in 1944 as the People's Republic of Macedonia yet no hysterical crying from the Greeks from 1944 to 1991 took place!

Went to Skopje last week and saw this statue. Several things I noticed about Macedonia Square.

* The statue isn't as big as it looks in photos, but it is still very impressive.
* The horses dick has also been sculptured, and at certain angles, its the first thing you see. Not sure if it is kid-safe.
* There are too many statues in such a small area. The statues should've been spread out throughout the city.

Depends how much it's going to cost. I wouldn't say building one is a waste-period. Until recently, Skopje had no "spirit" like it used to. It was a mish-mash of communist meets new, cheaply built buildings. It's starting to regain it's character again, and I support it.

There are alot more important things the Macedonian government needs to spend money on instead of statues. The infrastructure in Macedonia is that of a 3rd world nation. The hospitals are falling apart, the roads are a disgrace, and that's just the beginning. THIS is where the money needs to go first and foremost, not towards some stupid statues that are only there to provoke the Greeks. We should be fixing the country first, and worrying about the Greeks later.

I agree with the infrastructure/hospital part, they are desperate. BUT. The statues are not about greece. The statues are about a nation and a people that have SO MANY negative outside influences trying to make an entire generation lose it`s ethnicity and culture. If we ignore the culture for any more time than we already have, it will be lost forever. Something that has thrived for thousands of years can and will be lost in a single generation! It should be a balance of both - culture, health system, education, infrastructure, that`s what any good government does - balance budgets properly.
