TrueMacedonian, Thank you! keep up the good work!
SO that was why many Albanians fought in the Greek war and were pro-Greek (something I always wondered about), not because they wanted to be Greek, but because they were Orthodox and therefore were members of the Greek Church (THERE WAS NO ALBANIAN CHURCH at that time) Now it all makes sense!!!!
Again, thank you for this valuable information!
You're welcome guys. And you, Tsutsul, hit the nail on the head about the church. The same thing happened in the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia under Ottoman rule. The Ottomans implemented the Phanariots (greek speakers of the greek church) to become the Prince's of these 2 principalities. The Romanian churches gave liturgies in Slavic, but then the ruling class started to 'hellenize' (remember to be "greek" was a social status as well) so the Slavic patriarchates were replaced with new "greek" patriarchates. Names like Mavrocordatos, Ypsilantis, Ghicas, Callimachis etc... these became the Phanariots of the 2 principalities or the new ruling elite. They were all semi-vlachs and vlachs with the exception of Ghicas who was a hellenized Albanian. Ypsilantis and Mavrocordatos also fought in the greek war of independance. I won't get into anymore right now but Athens was not the first choice of a capital for the new "greek" state
