I wanted to know how many dialects are in the Macedonian language. This was going to lead to me asking which I should learn depending on the place I visit most. If I end up going this summer I will be spending most of my time in Ohrid. You know, I dont want to sound like a tourist lol (then again I don't expect to learn a dialect perfectly in 2 months!) Speaking the "proper" language might give that off :idn then again, it might make it easier for me to understand everyone.

There are subtle variations in the dialects, depending on which region (North, south , east, west) But if you have a basic understanding of the language like me, then it is not a problem. I would kindly recommend to learn from a text book if you want to learn. I studied from this text book to improve my grammar:

It is available on amazon.com:

I am curious about your background. Are your parents or grandparents Macedonian, or are you just a regular "Jane" who wants to learn the language? :)

the biggest difference in the Struga-Ohrid dialects is the 'k' sound,

in standard you say, "ke se vidime" "ke odam tamu" in Struga-Ohrid you say "che se vidime" "che odam tamu".

I also hate it when i hear someone say "dole" i can always tell the skopjani because of that

We also have alot of turkish loan words around Struga, like "bujrum te"
"karpus" for watermellon
"komat" for Zelnik
etc...
