I am going to ask you for the last time and I wont bother anymore, are you of part Greek and part Macedonian ancestry, and if so, did any of your elders know how to speak po nashe?

Then why not just write: Hey I'm a half Greek half Macedonian, instead of going through this whole name game?

My father is Macedonian from Solun* area. He speaks Macedonian at an acceptable level.
My granfather and grandmother spoke better Macedonian than Greek (he had to learn through the education system). Furthermore he couldn't speak Macedonian in public after 1936. He was born in 1905 and not in life any more.
My great-grand-father could hardly speak Greek at all.

From my mother's side I'm from Pieria (Katerini area). Pieria was known as Rumluki in the early 20th century. It was one of the few Teritories of Macedonia that had Greek (Rum-Rumdze) residents (together with Chalkidike ,the Kozani area, Nigrita and Darnakohoria).

*Does anybody have any knowledge on the Macedonian diallects of Solun area (Sulun)?

I would appreciate any assistance to learn my ancestors' language (actually a standardized version of it).

As for the cat and mouse game I just wanted to make an impressive entry. :)

What you didn't know about that?
There are also Macedonian vilages in the Drama area. One I know is Plevna (now Petrusa). Even guys my age (25) speak Macedonian there.

Congratulations, Suhin, you sure did manage to make a spectacular entry. I think you gave Soldier of Macedon a nice headache.

There are still Macedonian villages outside Solun where the people can speak their mother tongue. You could hear it with your own ears spoken by real people.

Vodenka is from just north of Solun and she may be able to help you as well.

Can you tell me what village your Macedonian family is from -- or are they from the city of Solun proper? If this is an issue and you'd rather not say, then please don't tell us.

Here is an old picture of the Solun area. It is part of the map used by the British when they fought to expell the Turks from Aegean Macedonia -- it is the official war map. You can see Macedonian village names before the Greeks changed them. Perhaps one of them is your family village.

Natse Parisis of the European Bureau of Lesser Used Languages, is from near Solun as well. His dialect would be close to your fathers.

The Solun dialect is very old, it was used as the basis of Old Church Slavonic, some 1100 years ago.

As for 'Sulun' this is the first time I'm hearing it, but there are many dialects. It's very intersting to hear this.

I will mention it again -- if people want to talk a little Greek with Suhin and Vodenka, please feel free to do so.

Suhin, try the following link, it is from a book called the Konikovo Gospel, I think they reflect the dialects around Solun;

http://maknews.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2231

The standardised version is not that different from the local dialects, the words are just in their proper forms rather than the shorter versions which us Macedonians are known for.

Sho Praish is Shto Pravish

Kai oish is Kade (or Kai) odish

Ask as much questions as you want, we are all willing to help you learn our ancestral langauge.

But Vodenka doesn't speak Macedonian either.

The village is not on this map. It's a little bit to the west.

Suhin, have you heard of Kostas Novakis? He's an ethnic Macedonian from the Solun area i believe, he has released some CD's with songs which are sung in the Solunski dialect from what i know.

There's more information on him here

and links to his CD's. If you want more help ask, but these songs would be a nice start with the Solunski dialect. You could probably try to contact Kostas too.
