Is this a serious project or just another idea?

hmm... it's more like a 'serious idea'

No, it is a serious project, albeit a slow moving one. Actually, it's just about ready to be started.

I have designed and built the database and developed the web application for it (very bare-bones version though).

I'm working on developing the front end of it properly before I release it - it will be part of the MacedonianCommunity.com project that I'm developing (currently the Suggestion Box is up there, but the site will be broken into different sections) - so the diaspora census project will be online and available to all and any who want to participate and help out.

The only thing I really need is a list of all villages in Macedonia (all of Macedonia), preferably in CSV or some other delimited format. That looks like it's going to take a while (based on sheer numbers) and I haven't the time just yet for that.

When I have the list of villages though, I can populate the database and really get things going.


If anyone is willing to help out and compile that list, I would be very grateful. Here's the format that would make things easy:

Village Name, Region/Municipality, Part of Macedonia

i.e.
Ovcharani, Lerin, Aegean Macedonia
Korenica, Krivogastani, Republic of Macedonia

etc, etc

Rogi, I believe that mk.wikipedia.org will be of good use to you here, because if you click on the edit tab of the wiki page listing all the villages, you can copy them into a text file then import them into a .csv using the column breaks as defined. I created the wiki pages doing the reverse, starting from a table and creating a macro to create the wiki code to the large list of villages (but i think i got rid of that original list )

I'll give it a go and let you know how it goes (on my openoffice prog).
