Letter to The Times
by Trajko Papuckoski
Dear Editor,
After reading "Wounded cobra's venom" in your October
21st edition by Simon Kuper I was shocked to read the following
line:
"Pancev becomes so emotional he switches from Macedonian
(as the local version of the old Serbo-Croat is now known) into
English."
A quick reference to any honorable source would state that Macedonian
was codified in 1945 when the Republic of Macedonia was founded
within Yugoslavia. Further research would have shown earlier Macedonian
writers such as Koco Racin (before WWII) and Krste Misirkov's "On
Macedonian matters" around the turn of last century. Also,
you would find Saints Cyril and Methodius who developed the Glagothic
alphabet back in the 800's AD.
Macedonian is officially recognized as a distinct south Slavic
language on par with Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, and Slovenian. So
where does Mr. Kuper find his inaccurate information? Does he know
that every one of Macedonia's neighbors has at least at one time
tried to forcibly assimilate or expelled Macedonians from their
native land? Does he care? How can such an apparent racist remark
be published?
If you have any further questions do not hesitate to ask, or refer
to MakNews' article dealing with hate speech at:
http://www.maknews.com/html/hate_speech.html
Lastly, on behalf of Macedonians around the world, I demand an
apology and a correction to be immediately published in your newspaper.
